Natural Birth in Lawrence, Kansas

Natural Childbirth for 21st Century Parents

Brio Birth Course Outline

The class series consists of 8 class sessions over 8 weeks.  Each class is approximately 3 hours long.  For details on what classes I have coming up, please see my Class Schedule.

I do offer crash course sessions for couples who don't have enough time before their due date for a regular series.  However, I find that couples who take the full series are much better prepared for their labors and I would encourage anyone who is able to take the full series.

Because relaxation and comfort measures are such an important part of reducing pain in childbirth, we will cover over 25 different techniques over the series.  We also watch several videos to help you become familiar with the sights, sounds and variations of normal labor.  Other topics covered include:

  • Sources of pain in labor and how to eliminate them
  • Teaching your partner to support you throughout labor
  • Stages of normal labor
  • Anatomy and hormones in labor
  • What to expect postpartum
  • Baby care
  • Newborn procedures
  • Breastfeeding
  • Variations on normal labor
  • Complications - prevention and common treatments
  • Cesarean section - prevention, surgery and postpartum recovery
  • How to select a care provider who will be supportive of your birth plan
  • Writing a birth plan
  • Communicating positively with your birth team
  • Optimal fetal positioning
  • Proper nutrition and exercise in pregnancy
  • Benefits of doulas (labor support)
  • Prenatal tests and procedures
  • Emergency childbirth

We will also do an extended labor rehearsal so that you can practice the many techniques you will learn in class to work with your body throughout labor.  The curriculum is truly the most comprehensive available.  Please let me know if you have any questions!
